I'll check it out, but Boom Studios isn't incredibly consistent on the quality at this point. Plus, James Dean Smith already created a bad ass bear like 20 year ago. BORIS THE BEAR rules all bad ass little robot bears. Detective does look really good. It's a pretty big week for books in #'s anyway. I think I marked out 9 spots in the X section yesterday on the shelves, and around 5 new Avengers books as well. Then there's JSA and JLA on the same day. Anyone check out Athena Voltaire last week? That's a great book.

"Continuity bukkake" definitely sums it up, but it's definitely worth your valuable time and money. It's too bad Pia Guerra wasn't able to draw the entire series because what she does contribute is perfect with Tony Lee's scripting.

on The Man With No Name. I'll agree that the current storyline wasn't an out an out classic, Tucco is too fat, Blondie is nowhere near as cool as he should be and the bad guy just isn't that great a foil but in terms of what it is and who the characters are (a western starring the guys from one of the greatest movies ever) not many are doing it. Props to Dynamite for being a great publisher and having stuff like this out there.

Destroyer/Mighty/Punisher/Invinc ible

I wills eriously lament the passing of Destroyer. This is a character that needs to stick around and kick some brutal ass up and down the MArvel U. Isn't Cap going to need some help against Osbourne? I bet he will... Or what about Secret Warriors? Nick Fury needs an experienced field Operative to run his kids on mission. Come on! Reed Rishards could give him a Tony stark designed heart for fuck's sake!

Anyway, I completely disagree on Mighty Avengers... snooze-ville and ugly. Plus... I just don't like Hank Pym. Also, honestly, I find Dan Slott to be a little heavy handed in the old school "have your character describe what is happening rather than let the art do the work for you" kind of way and I just can't get down with that.

Punisher, huh? People are really enjoying this? I was intrigued by the Osbourne assasination attempt stoyline but didn't pick it up... but it's looking good, huh? Recommended?

I'm currently catching up on Invincible trades and I'm very excited to reach the current issues. I've been peeking and it looks great. I still can't figure out how it is that I ever stopped reading this book. Good times, Kirkman, good times.

Haven't read the last couple of the Mighty Avengers, but before that Slott's work on it was not impressing me. Maybe because his earlier issues felt like it lacked the gravitas I want in an Avengers book.

Punisher - to be honest, anytime Punisher interacts with the rest of the Marvel U it usually rubs me the wrong day. Yes, I can handle him meeting Spider-Man, Daredevil or tussling with the Kingpin, but facing real super-villains and winning just doesn't seem right. Remember the great Spider-Man annual where Doc Oct was going to poison the Daily Bugle and kill a million NY readers? And the Punisher got involved and got his butt handed to him by Doc Oct in about six panels all while Doc Oct drank tea and talked on the phone without missing a beat? That is how well I see the Punisher taking on guys with powers.

Can't wait to see Cap. You've got Roger Stern writing a Cap story, even if it is a short story, and I am there. I hope the story involves Bernie Rosenthal, whom in my personal opinion was Steve Rogers best love interest ever.

Detective was superb.

The art in this book is amazing, hell it borders on stunning. The panel lay out is a thing ob beauty, and I'm hoping the creative juices keep flowing on this book for quite some time. There are numerous pages in this one that would make excellent posters. Then there's the Question back up. Uh, well, it feels like the super hot chick's tubby little buddy with acne. On it's own it probably wouldn't have held up very well, but paired with the main story and art in the first half of the book it just sticks out like something you want to politely turn your head away from and pretend it's simply not in the room.

I just read Cap #600. . .
by maelstrom_ZERO

. . .and they're bringing Captain America back from the dead? What? They've spent how many issues mourning the passing of Steve Rogers, even more issues establishing Bucky/Winter Soldier as the successor to Steve, and they want to bring Steve back? What the flying frak?

I mean, I do realize that Captain America's pretty popular. And I also realize that nobody ever stays dead in comics. But honestly, there's no reason (aside from milking profits) for Steve Rogers to return. Bucky's a fascinating, charismatic character that's holding up the Cap franchise pretty well.

The only possible consolation out of this whole debacle is that maybe Bucky will get back into his Winter Soldier outfit, which is miles better than his ridiculous Captain America uniform.

No reason for Cap to return?

Detective, Question and Avengers

I remember a lot of antipathy toward Batwoman on this board not so long ago, but I am now eager to read Detective. Mostly because I just finished the graphic novel "The Question: 5 Books of Blood" or something like that. It was excellent, full of both characterization and action. Rucka has done no wrong with me. Loved his Checkmate and Wonder Woman, as well as Question. So this should be good.

I think Renee Montoya is an outstanding character, so I am highly surprised to read that Batwoman was excellent and the Question was weak. We'll see tonight.

Aargh! I have to admit that Mighty Avengers had some really blatant examples of explaining things, not simply in place of showing them, but while showing them. It was ridiculous! But the book still has it's moments. The first Jocasta development was surprising but fitting and exciting. The second one seems to indicate the pending loss of Jocasta. That blows. I was drawn to this book for Scarlet Witch, a red herring, and Jocasta, who may be getting th axe. I already read Hercules, so my continuing with this one really depends on the roster.

Remender hasn't shown me he can write yet (early FEAR agent was okay, but still suffered from Remender's 'throw-everything-including-th e-kitchen-sink-at-the-hero-and -have-a-last-minute-deus-ex-ma china-appear-and-fix-everythin g' style of writing)

Punisher In The Marvel Universe

For it to work, it takes a committed creative team. Mike Barron did it sparingly in the '80s series, usually to good effect. Yes, as part of ACTS O' VENGANCE, Punisher crossed paths with Dr. Doom.

Or did he?

He was probably against some Doom-bots and Frank's idea was to wisely avoid straight mano a mano with the metal-covered man fiend, but to go after and threaten to destroy his property instead. Sorta like vandalizing the car of the school bully when he's not around to stomp yer @$$.

I almost bought this, and then I looked a little closer, and it's not a mini-series, it’s a crossover, where you have to buy other books... I said to myself, "you tricky bastards" So a no-buy, but for the best because I also couldn't figure out if liked Marc Silvestri's art anymore... and no one likes to be conflicted. Now though I kind of want to get it... hopefully it will be all traded up and in the half-price bin at comic-con. I'll probably just go back to the LCS and get it... is this addiction? I might have a problem.

So, now that I've read Detective, I have to say that it was solid, with great art and a good story. I think the Question backup was good, but it was so short there wasn't much meat to it, and now DC is charging an extra dollar for the titles with a backup feature. That is disappointing. The Question's new short hairdo (because she just wasn't dykey enough before) is also unfortunate. I will see where this goes, but I actually expected better.

Vacation called this week, and its unlikely anyone will read these, but.... 1. WTF with Slott? That guy got halfway through She Hulk and apparently completely imploded. I guess he has some Spidery goodness going on, but generally does anyone consider him one of ther faves anymore? And did anyone NOT consider him one of their faves a few short years ago? The Awesome Andy stand alone in She Hulk was one of my favorite single issues of any comic in years. 2. I thin Punisher vs regular MArvel U peeps would be awesome, as long as they took the gloves off and let Frank do what he does. Frank vs Crossbones and Sin? awesome, as long as he is allowed to blow them away and make it stick.

Steve Rogers retired...
"Ah... my favorite coffee shop, the perfect way to start my day before hitting the ol' drawing board... What the?... MADOK is robbing the bank and me withit my shield!(angst face) I guess I'll have to improvise... but how?"

Moments later, a new hero steps onto the street.

"So long, Captain America, hello, Captain Starbucks-apron-wrapped-around -my-head-man!"

Basicall y, if we've learned anything from Arnold Schwartzenegger, its that bad ass, former ass-kickers can never retire because Evil never does either...

I was never big on Slott, but I always considered him a very servicable second tier, so I had no problem staying with Mighty Avengers... until I read the first issue... Now? No, Thank You, Mr. Slott.

Was pretty freaking awesome. It's not flawless by any means, but the overall feel of the art and story got me excited about this title again. Batwoman is rad. Fantastic art. Williams' does one of the best 2 page spreads I've ever seen. Cool story as well, introducing a father/daughter dynamic with a bit of a twist. My only criticism was that some of the dialogue was a little extraneous and stiff. But definitely thumbs up.

Thats exactly WHY it would be cool. Why have Steve rush back? Let him want a normal life due to his near death experience. LEt him be FORCED to finally come back due to circumstance, say a last-panel reveal saving BuckyCap from impossible Osborne-induced odds. Basically picture Old Man Logan written by a far far far far superior writer with a far far cooler character. Awesomeness.

Ultimate Cap was awesome too, he was John Wayne. He was a man who believed in his country. He hadn't experienced some of the moments Regular Cap had. Their lives had been different. Both versions are great.

Of course, old man logan still managed to succeed where they didn't... couldn't?...
Because Wolverine is the ultimate cheat of a character Joe
by Continentalop
Jun 26th, 2009
09:00:27 PM
All Wolverine does is rip off better characters back story and experiences to artificially make him the ultimate "bad ass".

Captain America fought in WWII, so they decide to make Wolverine fight in WWII. The only problem is that Cap was MADE in WWII.

Nick Fury was a commando, so they later on retroactively make Wolverine a commando.

Punisher was a bad ass war vet whose wife was murdered, so they say "Hey, let's make Wolverine a bad ass vet whose wife gets murdered."

Batman travelled to the orient to learn martial arts and ninjitsu, so they decide to make Wolverine travel the world to learn martial arts and ninjitsu.

Highlander is basically immortal and fought in a bunch of battles and wars, so they decide to make Wolverine basically immortal and have him fight in a bunch of battles.

Hell, even Old Man Logan is that (good, but a rip off). Mad Max lived into a post-Apocalyptic future and Clint in Unforgiven was an over the hill/remorseful killer, lets make Wolverine as someone who lives in a post-Apocalyptic futere and is an over the hill, remorseful killer.

Shit, they even had to have him meet Doom and fight the Red Skull because the guy doesn't even have a good Rogues gallery of his own. Like fighting Omega Red or Sabretooth could ever be the big climatic villain in anything...

Yeah, I know
