* While “Fringe” finally stopped a precipitous slide (it was the only 9 p.m. show that gained this week), “Mentalist” suffered a surprisingly decisive loss in its first bout with “Private Practice.” “Mentalist” and “Fringe” were last season’s top new shows, but they are struggling since their moves to super-competitive Thursday.

* No show in memory has beaten a new Thursday “Survivor” two weeks in a row, and ABC’s terrible “FlashForward” didn’t either; it fell 8% to tie the CBS reality show in 18-49 for first place. (“Survivor” won in total viewers.)

* “Parks and Recreation” was the only series to show an increase in last night’s first primetime hour.

* Even though it didn’t have to take on “Grey’s” this week, “Leno” hit its lowest Thursday number yet. For the second Thursday in a row it came perilously close to falling behind The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” among 18-49 viewers.
